No Shave November

The shoe movement, TOMS, has started Movember (TOMS with little moustaches that raise awareness of cancers that specifically target men.) Currently we are celebrating Snovember in Bluefield. As folks were putting the last of the turkey on a sandwich for their paper bag lunch this morning, we were scraping ice and snow from our windshields.

On top of Snovember at Bluefield, the college has been celebrating No-Shave-November. Male students, faculty and staff have been competing to see who can grow the fullest, most manly, amazing beard possible. October 31st they had to shave their faces down to a baby soft consistency. They were not to bring a razor to their face lest they be disqualified. Tonight they are judged and the winner shall be crowned.

You might ponder, “What does the winner receive?” Glory. And a sweet participation t-shirt.

Liberal Arts: Worth Every Penny

Stores are littered with back-to-school products. Virginia just finished up their tax-free back-to-school deals. Commercials are airing with High School Musical-esque dance numbers that showcase the most stylish fashions for youth. We are heading back to the daily grind of education while Wal-Mart and Target are making a killing on plastic bins, pens and denim.

I spent the weekend with my mom and we browsed over the newspaper’s front page that read “Back to Back-to-School Shopping.” Mom told me that back-to-school gear for her 3 children, circa the 90’s, cost $300 a year. She spent money on anything from replacing cheap backpacks to pens to athletic wear. I asked her if she regretted it and she replied; “I never regretted anything that had to do with your education. However, I like having that $300 lying around nowadays.”

My sisters and I have all graduated from 4 year colleges and not one of us is in our field of study. I asked my mom if she felt like it was a waste of her money used on our educations. Once again, she told me that she regretted nothing about spending money on our educations.

The fact is; a Liberal Arts education is, of course, designed to train you in the major that you desire, but it also trains you in so much more. I would not be able to stand before a bunch of teenagers in a lecture hall and tell them about BC without my public speaking class. I learned how to deal with difficult situations and people in my psychology class. I am able to write this blog because of my Argumentative and Analytical Writing class. My algebra class did not kill me, so it only made me stronger. My education was well rounded.

My sisters and I are employable not because we majored in Fine Arts, Urban Planning or Sociology. We are employable because we earned Liberal Arts educations. So, my parents are 100% right in having no regrets about our educations.

Bluefield College is always asking: “What is your passion?”

Bluefield not only asks students this question, but prepares them with a way to answer their God-given calling.

Dr. Harry Snodgrass is a professor of Business at BC. He teaches students the savvy techniques of entrepreneurship, accounting and basic business principles.

What makes Dr. Snodgrass stand out is not only what happens in the classroom but what occurs beyond the lecture. He and he wife show up to nearly every home athletic event, student concert, play and convocation. He is a mentor and a friend to the students.

One student particularly that Dr. Snodgrass has encouraged and inspired is May graduate, Brittany Garton. Brittany is a literal person who sees everything in black and white. So her hypothesis was:

“If you go to college to study business, then you go find a job… in business.”

However, she had this ache in her heart for the children of Romania. She told Dr. Snodgrass about the dilemma of her head and her heart. With his guidance and faithful prayer she made the decision to deviate from the business route and go into full time missions.

A few weeks after graduation she boarded a plane with a one way ticket in hand to Romania. She is now a resident missionary at the Ruth School in Bucharest. Her job is to teach the precious Romanian and gypsy children the love of Christ and others, as well as basic gardening and play skills.

If you were to ask Brittany right now what her passion is, a one word response can be guaranteed, “Romania.”

Dr. Snodgrass is not the only professor or staff member at Bluefield College who will inspire a passion within you. You will find Godly guidance anytime you ask for it, and sometimes you will receive it without having to ask.

So: What is your passion?

Maggie's Trek 3- Growing Up

I used to wear these amazing (in my 17 year old point of view) khaki JNCOs. My shirts came out of the Goodwill 99¢ tee-shirt bin. On Wednesdays the new shirts would arrive and I would spend my time before youth group digging through the bin. I quickly developed an impressive tee-shirt collection. I wore a grungy hemp necklace and hemp anklet. Leather American Eagle clogs clad my feet. I was a certified hippy-snowboarder.

I headed to BC and became a bit more refined. My JNCOs turned into bootleg jeans. I realized that clogs made my feet wicked hot and smelly so flip flops replaced them. The hemp necklace was retired (yet not forgotten… it is still in my jewelry box.) But I still rocked the sweet retro graphic tees. However they were often covered by a North Face style (I wish it was a real North Face… one day I will break down and buy one) black fleece.

Now that I have an office job, I wear pencil skirts every day to work with a cardigan and flats. On the weekends I wear skinny jeans, blouses and my loveable Rainbows (hemp Rainbows… old habits die hard.)

Change is inevitable. There was a Christian song that played in the 90’s that said: “I believe in evolution. I believe in state of change.” This song had nothing to do with Darwinism, but it had everything thing to do with spiritual change and growth.

Like my wardrobe, my spirit and walk with Christ has changed greatly since I was 17. Then, I didn’t see myself as the Christian College type. I saw myself as a loner, who believed in a mighty God, but a God who had better things to do than look after me.

At 17 I believed this because on September 11, 2001 I walked into my senior English class and saw Mrs. Law crying at her desk. Feeling awkward we all quietly sat down at our desks. Minutes later an IT staff member brought a TV into our classroom and flicked on a random channel, because every channel was showing the same thing. At that moment I took off my rose tinted glasses and I began to see the world as hurt, broken, sick, and so full of hate. God was big, but was he big enough to have time to worry about me?

I stopped having spiritual goals; I stopped praying, reading and studying. They say coffee will stunt your growth. I was drinking some kind of metaphorical coffee and my spiritual growth was being stunted terribly.

Thankfully, I was a broken girl who was granted God’s grace when He opened the path to BC. Because of what I learned here, every day I grow in Christ. Some days I am the queen of walking with my Lord and other days I fail Him miserably. But I am always learning. Basic and groundbreaking principles were placed in my life by BC faculty, staff and students. Bluefield was my place of evolution. I am forever changed because of it.

Maggie's Trek 2- Cinco de Mayo

I visited Bluefield College on Cinco de Mayo, 2002 with a bit of trepidation. My mom and I pulled up to campus around 10am. It was snowing (May 5th mind you) and there were students crawling out of the cave on campus.

A few things to know about me before I continue my story:

1. My parents’ only idea of outdoor fun is skiing. Family vacation is always a wintertime event in my household. Don’t get me wrong, I love skiing too, but I as a kid and teenager I was always wanted more of the outdoors. I was intrigued with the idea of backpacking, camping, repelling and white water kayaking. My parents… not so much… at all.

2. I think this has to do with my love for skiing and snowboarding: I love snow.

I love shoveling snow.

I love snowball fights.

I love watching my dog play in the snow (She loves snow too.)

I love watching it fall.

I love it when it snows in October.

I wrote a song about how much I love snow.

I love snow storms late into the spring. Got the point yet?

What’s this? Two of my favorite things occurring simultaneously the moment I arrived to BC. I immediately became excited about this college visit.

I toured campus and I fell head over heels in love with Bluefield College. Everything felt like home to me. I met Walter Shroyer, head of the Art Department, and he showed me around Cox Studio (such an amazing facility.) I saw that the dorms were suite style so I wouldn’t have to share a bathroom with a billion other girls whose hygiene habits were unknown to me.

Things bigger than snow and outdoorsyness (according to spell check, I just made up a word) started to fall into place for me. From the academics that were offered to the relaxed Christian atmosphere, I knew that BC was the place for me.

Obviously BC was a perfect place for me because I am still here. (For those of you with concerns with this fact, I did Graduate… with honors… in 2006) I came back to campus to work in 2008 with the Admissions Office. I love to share my college experiences with students, so please don’t hesitate to ask any questions!

Please come and visit us too. It is so important to make sure BC is a good fit for you.

And for snow haters, I haven’t seen it snow in May since then. You will be ok!

Maggie's Trek- Now What

Hi I am Maggie Lavoie. This is my story about how I ended up at Bluefield College in 2002:

I grew up in the 90’s. While most current college freshmen were in the infant stage, I was memorizing every word to The Lion King. A phrase from that movie that I lived by was “Hakuna Matata.” It means: no worries. If you ask a close friend of mine or a co-worker, they will let you know that I say this phrase at least 1-10 times a day.

Unfortunately I take that phrase a little too seriously. I procrastinate… a lot.

Picture this: I sat at McDonalds with a chicken sandwich one lovely spring Wednesday night after youth group. It was tradition for the entire youth group to take over our local Mickey D’s after worship. My buddy since kindergarten, Fredrick, and I were sitting in a corner booth chatting and he asked:

“Mags, where are you going to college?”

“Psh, duh,cough, uhhhhhh…” I expelled with embarrassment.

Let me give you a history about Fredrick to explain my embarrassment: He was top of his class at a very well-known private high school that excels in academics. It was the kind of school where all the kids drive Audis and BMWs. Fredrick planned on going to Georgia Tech in the fall of 2002 to study Nuclear and Radiological Engineering. He sure enough finished with that degree at Georgia Tech and he is currently working with a prestigious nuclear science firm.

Here I was, in April, without a college in mind. After my stutter-fest, I let Fredrick know that I had dropped the ball and had procrastinated with filling out applications and visiting colleges.

Fredrick took on the role of my guidance counselor and proceeded to tell me about this small Christian college that a few of our friends were going to.

“You should go check out Bluefield College. I think it would be a good fit for you.”

So I visited…

Welcome Coach Mike Gravier

Bluefield College's search for a football coach is over. It was announced on Friday that Mike Gravier will be re-starting our program. Mike has been in the coaching business since 1988, both on the high school and collegiate levels. He also knows what it is like to start a football program with starting one at Malone University.

Mike and his family have spent the past 8 years on the mission field working with Christian Outreach International in Florida and they are currently working with Heaven Sent Ministries in neighboring Princeton, West Virginia.

Mike has hardly been off the football field since going into the mission field. With Christian Outreach International he has taken teams overseas to start up football leagues in Mexico, Czech Republic and Ukraine. Since moving to Princeton, Mike has taken an assistant coaching position at Concord University.

We are excited to have Mike with us and we look forward to the first collegiate football game since 1941 in about 770 some odd days!

Football

In 1941 Bluefield College played their very last football game. The following year the football program ended due to men accepting the call to duty during World War II.

69 years later on June 4, 2010 Bluefield College announced the reinstatement of the football program. It is expected for the program to be a club sport for Fall 2011 and then become intercollegiate for Fall 2012.

The main joke going around is, "Bluefield College: Undefeated Since 1941"

It has been a busy Winter and Spring. Blogging has been few and far between.

Winter- it was epic. It started off with an 18 inch blizzard and ended with another blizzard. I think all together we got 100 or so inches of snow. All of the Admissions Counselors tried to go visit high schools to meet prospective students at VA schools. Either we would be snowed in at home or the high schools would be shut down. (I for one had to turn around on my way to visit a school because I could not see in front of me)

The arrival of spring was lovely and so badly needed by all of us who were infected with sever winter cabin fever.

Spring kicked off with a stellar men and women’s basketball season closure.

We hosted our First Annual High School Speech Contest, featuring a keynote address from inspirational athlete and best-selling author Kyle Maynard. If you haven’t heard of him visit his website to learn about his amazing story : http://www.kyle-maynard.com/.

Then we ended the semester with Mud Pig Day and a wonderful graduation, creating 129 new alumni.

Fall, Traveling, Homecoming Oh My!

It is the most wonderful time of the year in Bluefield. Well one of the 4 most wonderful times of the year. We do celebrate all 4 seasons equally. FALL! You just have to love it and the amazing colors.

The Admissions team has been on the road like it is their job! (well, because it is their job) We are out meeting students like you. This is the picture of one of our cars taking a pit stop at Historical Mitchie Tavern in Charlottesville, VA. Go there for a good hot meal after touring Monticello or wandering around Carter Mountain Orchard (The reason the Subaru is terribly muddy)

Last but not least. Today is the start of Homecoming on our beautiful campus. This morning the beauty was interrupted by this display of art (?) Ah, the Secret Seven. Legend has it that President Charles Harman ('46-'72) started the original prankster group. There has been periods of activity and periods of dormancy since the start. The group is comprised of seven students. Rumor has it these past students have went on to become elected officials, CEOs, pastors and even faculty and staff on this very campus.

So we have been blog-up-keep slackers. Our most sincere apologies. Here is where we are with the new Res. Hall:

I took a tour of the facility the other day and it is top notch! Rish and Cruise are nice dorms, but this is nice. Real nice. There is beautiful tile in the roomy bathrooms. Large double rooms and fantastic single rooms (which are climate controlled!) Not to mention the parlors on each floor equipped with a kitchenette.

Of course there are more pictures to come as the construction draws to an end!

Bluefield has come to life in the past few days. Probably because of an unusual heat wave that has hit us (Al Gore just might be right! But it did snow on Monday... hmm) students are coming out of their dorm rooms. Greek games took place over the weekend for our Greek Life. With the games have come some overnight practical jokes. It was common to wake up to see your car's windshield covered in Greek lettering with window paint. Oh what warm weather will cause! You have to love it!

An Appalachian monsoon hit this weekend but the weather cleared up for a wonderful, warm, GREEN St. Patrick's Day. So I gathered up my camera and started snapping pictures around campus. "Torchbearer of Freedom"

BC Theatre to Present 'The Torchbearer of Freedom'

Last spring, Bluefield College hosted a month-long Holocaust Symposium featuring lectures, concerts, drama, and discussion that significantly impacted the campus and community at-large.

This spring, February 12-16, BC's Theatre Department will offer an encore of sorts in the presentation of "The Torchbearer of Freedom," an inspiring drama about the life of American Mary Sigillo Barraco, who helped provide refuge for Jews in Belgium during the Nazi invasion in 1940.

The performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. each night, February 12-16, in Bluefield College's Harman Chapel, with the exception of a 2 p.m. matinee for the Sunday, February 15 showing.

The play, written by Virginia author John W. Remmers, tells the moving true story of Barraco, a teenage American living in Belgium at the time World War II erupted. Within a five-year span, Barraco worked with the underground to help smuggle escaping Jews out of Nazi territory, transport weapons for the resistance, and work tirelessly to oppose the tyranny and oppression of the Third Reich.

Although captured in 1943 and tortured and interrogated by the Gestapo, Barraco never gave up. Even after her release, she continued to fight for the freedom of the Jews.

"Mary is a true hero of World War II," said BC Theatre's artistic director Charles Reese about Barraco, who still lives in Virginia Beach, Virginia. "At 85, she still speaks to middle and high school students on a regular basis about what freedom means."

Bluefield College's Caleigh Keith, who recently met Barraco in preparation for the play, will occupy the lead role in the production, after starring as Anne Frank last year's Holocaust Symposium presentation of "The Diary of Anne Frank."

BC's Donnie Bales, also a veteran of "The Diary of Anne Frank," will play the role of Victor, a Belgian collaborator who joins the SS. Christian Masters, known for his role as Hook in last fall's "Peter Pan," will play Barraco's fiancée and fellow resistance fighter, Armand.

Jennifer Bohannon, recently seen as Grace Bradley in BC Theatre's "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever," will play Barraco's mother, Leona, while David Sadler, another "Anne Frank" veteran, plays the SS commander Heydrich Rasch.

Other cast members include Marland Funk, Tim Kerr, Will Olive, Zach Nester, Luke Stevens, Jesse Stevens, Libby Stevens, Rebekah Transue, and James Young. BC Theatre's technical director Rebecca McCoy Reese joins Charles Reese as director of "The Torchbearer."

Hey everyone,

Let me just start off by saying that the weather in Bluefield is so bipolar. One day we are sledding, the next day it’s raining and washing away our sledding hill. This morning it was so nice outside that I could wear just a t-shirt and jeans and be comfortable, but only a few hours later it was pouring and freezing! Personally, my vote is that we get more snow, because I want to try out the new sleds that we won at stock-your-room-Bingo. Just in case you aren’t aware, this is the night when S.U.B. (Student Union Board) gives away a ton of cool free stuff like food, gift cards, sleds, and a futon! It’s pretty much one of my favorite events ever.

Although it’s great coming back to school for second semester, I have learned that it is not so fun during flu season. Once one person gets it, you better say your prayers and go stock up on some Airborne. It doesn’t mess around; my suitemate and roommate got it, so did the people across the hall and it was not pretty! The good news is, teachers understanding as long as you tell them why you are going to miss class. They are actually probably happy you are staying in bed so that they don’t catch it and bring it home to their families.

I’m taking the ceramics on the wheel class, and let me just tell you that I really wish that I had taken the pottery I class first. I didn’t realize that I skipped the beginner class and now it is really tough trying to throw on a wheel. Walter, the teacher, is really good at what he does, but he makes everything look so easy when it really isn’t. Moral of the story, take the beginner class first if you want to do pottery.

The cafeteria food has gotten better. They got in a healthy choices bar, which has weightwatcher point values on the food. They also started to put out more fruit than they had before. There is a new Panini bar and some better things were added to the salad bar. One of my favorites, they got a chocolate milk machine! So, even when I don’t like what they are serving in the line, at least I have a couple more options now.

The past few months at Bluefield have been a blast! I was a little nervous when I first got here; what if people don’t like me? What kind of things do I want to get involved with? I asked myself all of the usual questions that a college freshman would ask themselves.

I am rarely ever bored here at Bluefield. Whether we are going to a sporting event, or just sitting around watching a movie, there is always something to do. All of the people here are so easy to get along with and fun to hang around. I love that SUB (Student Union Board), BCM (Blessings and More), and other student organizations always have something fun planned for us during the week so that we can socialize together. There is also a lot of great music at Bluefield. We had the band Need to Breathe come a few weeks ago and perform for us, which was amazing. There is also our very own Skyline Drive and First Day of Forever who play for us in convocation sometimes. We also have Shawn McDonald coming in November, which I am very excited about!

Last weekend was our homecoming. The theme was Havana Nights and they did a very good job with decorating and fitting it into the dance itself. We were offered Salsa dancing lessons for the last couple of weeks, which I attended. Everyone who went seemed to have a really good time, and it came in handy when they played some Salsa music at the dance. There was a lot of good music played, and you couldn’t help but get up on the dance floor and join in with everybody else. It was a fun dance that left everyone exhausted the next day.

We have had just two weeks of Fall weather. It went from the 80's to low 40's & 30's in just a few days. Some may call it global warming, we say, "that is Bluefield weather for ya'."

High Up on the Mountain Top

Bluefield Students headed back into the wild a few weekends ago. They Backpacked along the Appalachian Trail up to the highest point in Virginia, Mount Rogers, in Grayson Highlands State Park. The hike up to Mount Rogers has been a annual tradition for the past 6 years.

We had a dodge ball tournament a few weeks ago and these men were probably the most memorable part of the evening.
From the back to the front we have President Dr. Olive, Ewell Vernon the Athletic Director, Toby Zigar the VP of Enrollment Management, Steve Spangler the VP for Advancement, and Dr. Kerr our Bio Professor and interim VP of Academics.
As you can see, Dr. Spangler like to put fear in the heart of his opponents by yelling. His opponents in this game was the Women's Soccer team.
And, YES, their shirts are tucked into sweatpants.
We are blessed to have leadership at Bluefield who can get the job done along with having a good time and giving our students a good laugh!

New students, new stuff, new professors, new coaches! There is so much that is new here and we are feeling the excitment of it.

Ground will be breaking soon for our new residence hall.
We have cleared out an area in the Student Activities Center for the Starbucks kiosk.
The soccer and volleyball teams have all moved into the dorms and have been practicing all week. It is great to see students milling about campus, even though they are fresh out of a tough practice and don’t smell lovely! But we are excited to see y’all play! (The first home game of the season is the Women’s Soccer scrimmaging against Alderson Broaddus College on Thursday the 21st.)

We are also very excited to welcome the rest of the Class of 2012 on Saturday and see our returning friends on Sunday. Have safe travels everyone!

Tassels, Gowns and Foghorns

You could hear foghorns, applause and cheers coming from the Bluefield College Quad at the 85th Annual Spring Commencement this past Saturday. 168 students received their Bachelors Degree and listened to the words of the keynote speaker Rev. Robert Skelton. Other speakers were graduates, Sharde Sherman (traditional) and Rita Blevins (adult). Dr. Kinney spoke to the graduates on behalf of the faculty.

New Residence Hall

Students, staff, faculty and community formed a rectangular outline in front of Cruise Hall to symbolize the projected Residence Hall. Right before Bluefield College broke ground with city officials everyone in the outline let go of balloons to mark the start of construction on the Hall. The 100 bed dorm will have modern conveniences and common areas with kitchenettes and activity space. The $4.3 million dollar project should be open summer or fall of 2009. "This is the Day the Lord Has made, We will rejoice and be glad in it!" ~Dr. Olive

Mud Pig Day 2008

Bluefield College celebrated its 30th annual Mud Pig Day yesterday, May 1st. Mud Pig Day is a beloved day of students and faculty. Classes shut down the Thursday before exams begin to help everyone let loose. Students partook in the ridiculously long slip and slide, mud pit, moonwalks/obstacle courses and mounds of food.

This year’s Mud Pig Day commenced with the ground breaking for the new Residence Hall that will be open Fall ’09. It was an all around exciting, yet relaxing, day for BC students and faculty/staff.

Helen's World ~ Volume 2

Hello and I hope you have had a wonderful day. Let me see where should I begin about life at BC right now? Well, our Spring Formal went off with a "splash"! Everyone seemed to enjoy it and have a great time the entire night. I am a member of the Student Union Board and we put on any big events for the campus body. It was a long...long day that Friday. We actually began decorating and making decorations days and even weeks ahead of time, just because it gets so hectic a few days before the dance. Our theme was "Under the Sea" and we felt like we were going to see fish, whales, and dolphins in our sleep because of what we were working with for decorations. That and we were DEFINITELY sick of seeing the color blue! Wow, it was a lot a blue! But, students loved the decorations and the theme, so it was worth our blue insanity.

On another note, winter is officially over and spring is here to stay...at least until summer. Walking around on campus in the 72 degree weather, I feel like a obsessive poet...."The flowers are all in bloom and the animals are all a flutter as they mingle happily on the Bluefield campus". Man, where did that come from?And I'm not even an English major!
The weather is beautiful though, especially compared to the cold, icy winter that Bluefield faces every year. Every one is ready for winter to arrive by the time summer is over. Everyone is ready for the snow to fall and cover the mountains, but we are really ready for spring once winter is brought to a close.

The Bluefield College campus and community is right in the middle of Holocaust Remembrance month. All month long, we have been focusing on the events of the Holocaust and it's survivors from that raged time of hatred. The Drama Department has just finished it's astounding performance of "The Diary of Anne Frank", the tale of Anne Frank and family through her diary. The play was amazingly done and I marveled at how the actors and actresses really became their character that they were portraying. By the end of the play, I was emotionally and mentally tired. It really seemed to take me into the horrible times and wrap me into the characters lives that they bravely faced everyday and every night. Every area and department here on campus is involved in this look into the Holocaust and we are all entranced in the immensity of its horror and hope through it all. It has been an incredible and startling experience so far and I am usually eager to see what I can experience in the next event geared toward the memorial of those from the Holocaust.

Bring on the Noise

Wonderful, new noises will be coming from Harman Chapel in the fall. Yesterday, Bluefield College introduced the new Instrumental Program which will be headed up by Dr. Andrew Necessary, who comes to us from Concord University. Dr. Necessary received his bachelors from Elon University and received his masters and Ph.D. from UNC. Dr. Necessary shows excitement for bringing in several instrumental ensembles, such as creating a jazz band. This is an exciting time for the music department and if you have any questions about this program feel free to ask!

Holocaust Symposium Begins

Tuesday night BC held a reception for Max Kammer who documented WWII with his camera. Kammer is a Bluefield, WV resident who was just a teenager when he captured the cold truth of the Holocaust and can share his story to this day. The display in Landsdell Hall depicts grim, brutal scenes of the Orduf and Buchenwald Concentration Camps.

In the Science center the Virginia Holocaust Museum brought their “Dame Mary Baracco: Torchbearer of Freedom” display from Richmond. Mary Baracco was born an U.S. citizen but later moved to Europe to be a Freedom Fighter. She was betrayed and then captured by the Gestapo. Mary, at the age of 19 was sent to four different prisons and then to the Breendouck Concentration Camp where she endured torture and sterilization. Mary survived the holocaust and documented her ordeal through painting and scrapbooking artifacts from her life.

Thursday, the Bluefield College Theatre Department opened the Diary of Anne Frank. The production depicts the true story of Anne, who was a Jewish, happy-go-lucky 13 year old who documented her life in hiding. Freshman, Caleigh Keith, who portrays Anne, had the audience laughing at one moment then in tears the next. Historic videos and pictures from the War were shown on screens during the production, which punctuated the reality of the horrors. As photographs of Anne streamed on the screens at the end of the production, the audience in respect remained silent.

Jeff Diehl Visits Campus

Jeff Diehl, a semi-local potter from Summers County, WV came to the Bluefield College campus and set up shop in the Cox Visual Arts studio. Jeff, who says he was born with clay in his blood, has been teaching the art of ceramics since the early 80's. Today he preformed demonstrations for students and community members. Jeff is known for using many different firing techniques which make his pottery incredibly unique!

Hi, I am Helen! I am a sophomore and a Music Education major. I will be blogging on here every so often to tell you about what’s happening on the beautiful Bluefield campus, what is to come for us and a current student’s viewpoint of being on-campus. So, have a seat, relax and enjoy hearing about the “happenin’s”and things to look forward to!

The weather is beginning to turn warmer and the students are starting to do fun activities outside, after being cooped up for 4 months in the dorms. Don’t get me wrong, I love the dorms, but after having no other place to hang-out accept the dorms, it can get a little boring! So, when spring begins to bud, it’s almost like a time of freedom; like a breath of fresh air during those doldrum days of school that students tend to find themselves in. It’s called spring fever!

Next month in the beginning of April, we are going to having our Spring Formal. Spring Formal is put on by Student Union Board or SUB, as we like to call it. I am a member of this organization and we put on a majority of campus-wide events along with the Residence Life and BAM, blessings and More. Our theme for this year is “Under the Sea”. It is going to be a “sea” of greens, blues, and bright colors imitating the awesome beauty of the living ocean. It is sure to be a “swell” time for BC students and we are all looking forward to it! Plans for a Community Center

Bluefield College and the Town of Bluefield, Virginia have a vision for our school and community. The school has expressed the need for a Student Activities Center that offers more to its students. And the town needs somewhere for the kids to participate in the rec. leagues.

Together they created the Bluefield College Campus and Community Center. The facility is a 82,000 sq. foot, 14 Million Dollar project that is currently in the fundraising stage. It will hold a 1,000 seat competition gym and 3 rec. gyms, along with a fitness center, training rooms, walking tracks, conference rooms, and a student center. We are hoping that in one year the construction will begin based on the fundraising.

Bluefield College Ram Pride

The Bluefield College basketball team and baseball team have been hitting the road lately.

During spring break our Ram Baseball team toured Florida. They won 2 of their 3 games. Their record to date is an outstanding 12-2.

For the second year in a row BC men’s basketball headed to the NAIA National Championship ending their season with a 25-7 overall record!

In Women’s Soccer, Joe Wehrle has been named the head coach. He will officially start April 1st but is available to contact for inquiring soccer players.

Go and Tell

Campus Minister, David Taylor and Rish Residence Hall Director, Kelly Somers headed up a group of students and traveled to South Africa for Spring Break. Amy Montgomery, Brad Shockley, Brad Lavoie, Sharde Sherman, Jessica Rayle, Derek Bostic, Josh Cline, Lee Adams, Lesley Gray, Lisa Reale and Scott Quirin flew out from Charlotte, NC Thursday, February 28th and landed in Cape Town, South Africa.

From there they went to the Orange River where they worked with Churches, both in Namibia and South Africa. From dawn till dusk they provided worship services, handed out Bibles and witnessed three baptismals. The remainder of the trip the BC crew hung out with local kids. They played soccer and taught them how to play Duck-Duck-Goose. They also went around Cape Town and made connections with the locals by doing prayer walks and delivering meals to folks who make a daily average of 2$ a day.

Also, what is going to another country with out being able to be a tourist? Before the students left they went to Chapman’s Peake and Boulders Beach where they swam with penguins. The crew returned to the states on Sunday leaving their mark on South Africa and Namibia.

It is a nasty, rainy windy day in Bluefield but we can feel Spring right around the corner! Baseball and Softball season has started. And if you have been in Bluefield for a while, the sound of the baseball cracking against the bat is one of the first signs of Spring. Flowers are coming up and the birds are back. It is the perfect time to come up and check out our campus, it isn't too cold it isn't too hot. Well, it really is never too hot, local stores celebrate when it gets above 90 Degrees by handing out free lemonade.
